Economic Geology Associate Professor Nanogeochemistry My research is focused on the big influence that nano-features have on the evolution of our planet. My research group (aka the Sulfide Sleuths) combine fieldwork, petrology, and nano-geochemistry to investigate a range of questions ranging in ore geology (especially sulfide hosted precious and critical metal deposits), but also cosmochemistry, metamorphic petrology, and materials science. My group utilizes a variety of nano-analytical techniques and we specializing in atom probe tomography (APT) of insulating materials and especially sulfide minerals. We currently have projects looking at non-traditional sources of critical and precious metals in North America (Great Lakes Massive sulfide deposits, Keweenaw Copper Belt, and Carlin type deposits in Nevada and Yukon Territory), SW China, N Africa, Sweden (REE elements in Iron-oxide apatite mine waste), and Austria (precious and critical metals in historic mine waste). We are particularly interested in the interplay between mining, sulfide minerals, mine waste, environmental contamination, and the role that modern mining practices can have in cleaning up historically contaminated sites.
