UGA Geology majors visited the KaMin kaolin mining operations in Gordon, GA.

UGA Geology majors visited the KaMin kaolin mining operations in Gordon, GA. With the help of KaMin geologist, Eric Parrish, the class was provided a core specially retrieved for them, which penetrated a Miocene-Eocene- Cretaceous sequence.  Students sampled different sedimentary facies and looked at different alteration zones.  This particular kaolin is a key component in making automobile catalytic converters. This literally hands-on experience is essential to see how geologists work in the field bringing mineral resources to products used every day by the public. With hybrid cars being in greater demand, the supply of products and the geologists who find the raw materials will also be in high demand in the foreseeable future.
