Image: Each year, the UGA Department of Geology recognizes an extraordinary alumni whose exceptional support has served students at one of Georgia's premier geology degree programs. Dr. Robert Craddock, geologist at the Smithsonian's Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences is the 2018 recipient of the Distinguished Geology Alumni Award. Dr. Craddock received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Geology from UGA and continued his studies at Arizona State University (M.S. Degree) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He has been a geologist at the Smithsonian since 1988, where he combines remote sensing data, quantitative geomorphic analyses, and terrestrial field investigations to understand the geologic history of Mars and planetary processes. Dr. Craddock is an outstanding professional, mentor, and colleague who has long exemplified a high level of commitment to the Department of Geology that can serve as a model for others. He clearly recognizes the impact the department had on his education and has been consistent in "giving back" to the department through student support. Over the years, he has introduced many UGA geology students to planetary science through internships and research assistant positions within the Smithsonian Institution, where students have conducted field investigations in Hawaii and Australia. He serves on graduate student committees and generously gives his time and expertise to students and colleagues within the geology department. Further, Dr. Craddock is dedicated to the widespread growth of geology and planetary science within the research community. Many of the students he has mentored have gone on to pursue careers in planetary science and are very successful. The Distinguished Geology Alumni Award is a high honor and presented to individuals who bring recognition to the geology department through outstanding leadership and service to the their profession and the geology community. Dr. Craddock reflects the importance of his education at the University of Georgia, demonstrates pride in our alma mater, and provides continued support to the geology program at UGA. Thank you, Dr. Craddock, and congratulations!
