Image: Recently, a few big name oil companies have sent representatives to speak and recruit students from the Department of Geology at UGA. Over the past few years, our department has successfully sent graduates and current students on to jobs and internships in the oil industry. Christopher Ginn received his undergraduate degree from College of Charleston and his master’s degree from UGA, during which he completed an internship with Anadarko Petroleum Corp. After the internship, Ginn received a full time job offer in their structural research department. Representing Anadarko, Ginn spoke tothe students, radiating great optimism for “sharp geologists” who have high job prospects. Another big time oil enterprise, Exxon-Mobil, requested resumes from students and even selected some to interview. Senior Joe Booth received an interview from Exxon-Mobil about which he commented, “It’s a great opportunity to meet with a leader in the industry, and we (the students) are lucky to have these companies come to us.” Like Ginn, another UGA master’s student, Corbin Kling, received a summer internship with Chevron in the Houston office. While in Houston, Kling earned a position as an earth science intern, working in the deep-water explorations and project business unit (DWEP). Researching several sequence boundaries, he successfully mapped over 200 square miles of the deep offshore ocean, and at the end of his internship, presented his findings to the DWEP leadership team. This year, both Chevron and Exxon-Mobil requested resumes from UGA students, increasing the presence of dawgs in the oil industry. By Tony Moraes
