Title: 100 million years in the Western Blue Ridge

Abstract:

The Appalachian Orogen records succeeding tectonic events associated with accretion of various terranes, evolving throughout the Paleozoic and leading to the assembly of Pangea. Multiple stages of deformation and/or metamorphism of these terranes complicate their tectonothermal evolution. Particularly, the timing and driver of metamorphism of the Western Blue Ridge (WBR) terrane stands as a long-lasting debate. Our recent work integrates diverse geochronological and geochemical methods to decipher the thermotectonic evolution of the WBR and establishes a perspective that challenges interpretations of its Ordovician Taconic metamorphism, but suggests metamorphism is Silurian or younger. In this seminar, I will share my group’s findings based on samples that were initially examined by UGA Department of Geology faculty and marked as important 60 years ago.
