Friday, August 22 2025, 3 - 4pm GG Building 200A or via Zoom Colloquium Speaker: Hamed Soroush Title: Innovating the Subsurface: Advancing Geothermal Energy and Thermal Storage for a Low-Carbon Future Hosted by: Dr. Garing Abstract: The global energy transition is accelerating the demand for sustainable, reliable, and scalable power solutions. One of the most promising yet underutilized opportunities lies beneath our feet. Moving beyond the traditional extraction of minerals and hydrocarbons, a new energy era is focused on using the Earth both as a renewable power source and as a natural battery for energy storage. This presentation explores how geothermal energy and subsurface thermal storage can deliver baseload renewable power, provide seasonal or short-term energy storage, and enable sustainable cooling. We will discuss the technical innovations overcoming long-standing geothermal challenges, the role of subsurface storage in supporting renewable integration and grid stability, and the economic benefits of these solutions. Drawing on recent field deployments and case studies, participants will gain a strategic perspective on how these technologies can enhance energy security, reduce carbon intensity, and complement diverse energy portfolios. Bio: Hamed Soroush is the CEO and Founder of Teverra, a technology-driven subsurface solutions company dedicated to advancing sustainable energy systems.
